What Do We Know?

People from many different walks of life are concerned about the concentration of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere because there is significant evidence that human activity is increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

How do we know?

Below is a Keeling Curve that shows the change in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration over the last 50 years.

Also, ice core records show that concentrations of carbon dioxide have increased steadily since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution 250 years ago. Clearly, the concentration of this particular greenhouse gas has increased recently. Similar measurements show that the concentrations of other greenhouse gases, such as methane and nitrous oxide, have also increased.

What was the atmospheric concentration in the year you were born? The year your parents were born? What is the present day concentration?
