Why Should We Care?

An understanding of the structure of atoms is central to our understanding of the chemical nature of our world. For example, an understanding of atomic structure allows us to understand the chemistry of energy production, medicine and climate.

In most of our study of chemistry, we focus on changes involving the electrons surrounding atoms. By contrast, nuclear chemistry is concerned with changes that occur within an atom’s nucleus. An understanding of nuclear chemistry has enabled the development of nuclear power, that harnesses the energy released from nuclear changes. Nuclear power is one important alternative energy source with potential to reduce our impact on climate from the combustion of fossil fuels.

Question for Thought

How does an understanding of atomic structure enable climate scientists to understand the chemistry of climate?
